Arch Connelly (Chicago, Illinois 1950 – New York, 1992)

Si è mosso nell’ambito dell’East-Village e della Patterns & Decoration, quella tendenza che, a partire dalla seconda metà degli anni 70, in preciso contrasto con le correnti minimal e concettuali, si afferma in America con la sua carica opulenta e trasgressiva, ridondante e ludica, carica di riferimenti alle varie forme di arte popolare e artigiana.
La vocazione “iperdecorativa” esasperata all’ennesima potenza in quell’ornare oggetti banali e “senza qualità” appartenuti al quotidiano, affonda anche le radici nella grande tradizione americana della Pop Art.

L’ultima fase “New Baroque” porta Connely ad una iperbole dell’effimero, ad un’apologia del teatrale. Con risultato però di trasformare la sua pittura in una pittura di alta classe che va oltre il sovraccarico di raffinatezza voluto da Pollock a da Stella di stampo hollywoodiano, per immergersi in una atmosfera fin de siécle.
