L’arte di Rhonda Zwillinger sfugge ad una facile classificazione. Innegabilmente fa parte della grande tradizione americana della pop-art, realizzando opere che sono attivamente impegnate nel dialogo con la cultura popolare. La sua opera ha ripetutamente suscitato domande sui modi con cui il potere politico e sessuale vengono rappresentati dai mass-media. Zwillinger rimane inevitabilmente ricordata come “East Village artist” in quanto emergeva in un particolare momento storico a New York City. L’East Village era un mondo di arte istantanea, un’alternativa auto inventata dell’istituzione d’arte basata sul Soho di New York. La Zwillinger porta con sé il miglior spirito di questo tempo, capace di operare contemporaneamente come la femminista rigorosa e come la seduttrice. Occupa un territorio distinto che vela linee di distinzione, continuando a produrre il tipo di opera iconoclastica che dà imbarazzo all’élite compiaciuta.
