Ben Vautier

He was born in Naples in 1935 and moved to Nice, where he keeps on working after living in different countries: Turkey, Egypt and Swiss.

In the Fifties he started his production of paintings marked by Abstractism, later in the following decade he approached the circles of Nouveau-Rèalisme, mainly Arman and Spoerri.

In 1962 he met and started to attend George Maciunas, an outstanding figure of the Fluxus group, of neo-Dada inspiration, that he became member of and supporter, sharing that philosophy and poetry identified with the art and life equation.
His work is marked by irony and irreverent tones. The work I’m an impostor of 1959 launched the Tableax-écriture, lapidary writings realized on various supports. He organized different happenings and performances. He also realized the public action (staring at his public) and living sculptures among which his Ben’s warehouse, the laboratory in Nice where the artist gathered installations and objects, deserved to be remembered.

In the 80s, after the conceptual wave, he invented for the emerging painting trend in France the term “Figuration Libre” and introduced in his works a figurative ironic-grotesque component.
