Berlin 1896 – La Haye 1983
Of Dutch origin, he left the school very young and devoted himself to painting. He soon approached the gallery Der Sturm of Berlin. In 1918, thanks to his friendship with Mehring, he met Baader, Grosz, the brothers Herzfelde and joined the Dada movement in Berlin. He was appointed Director of the Dada centre in Amsterdam by Huelsnbeck together with Jean Bloomfield. In 1920 he contributed to the realization of the “Dada-Almanach”. In 1922 he studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, where in 1923 he exhibited his most famous work Metropolis, in which the influence of Raul Hausmann and Hannah Hoch was recognizable. In 1925 he moved to Berlin again and devoted himself to painting. During the ‘30s when he got back to Amsterdam, he worked mainly on portraits of poets and artists.
