Rhonda Zwillinger Brooklyn, New York 1950
The art of Ronda Zwillinger avoids any easy classification. It is inevitably part of the great American tradition of Pop art, realizing artworks which are actively committed in the dialogue with the popular culture. Her work has repeatedly aroused questioning about the way in which the political and sexual power was represented by mass media. Zwillinger is remembered as the “East Village artist” because she emerged in a particular historical moment in New York City. The East Village was a world of immediate art, a self-invented alternative by the art institution based on Soho of New York. Zwillinger carries with her the best spirit of that time, capable of simultaneously performing as a rigorous feminist and a seducer. She occupies a distinctive territory bearing distinction lines, keeping on producing that iconoclastic work which embarrasses the pleased elite.
